Circle skirt cutting layout: how the pieces go on the fabric
How circle skirt pieces sit on the fabric — grain direction, why panels alternate end to end, and what usable width really means once the selvedges are gone.
A circle skirt is not cut from rectangles. Every piece is a slice of a ring, which means the usual “fold it in half and pin the pattern to the fold” instinct gets you a layout that either wastes a lot of fabric or does not fit at all.
The shape you are actually placing
One panel of a circle skirt is an annular sector: a wedge with a curved inner edge at the waist and a curved outer edge at the hem. It is widest across its hem end and narrowest across its waist end.
That asymmetry is the whole reason layout matters. A rectangle packs against another rectangle with no thought. A wedge packs efficiently only if you turn every other one around, so the narrow end of one sits beside the wide end of its neighbour.
Why panels alternate end to end
Look at any cutting layout the calculator draws for four or more panels and you will see pieces labelled as turned end for end — every second one rotated 180°.
This is not a trick to save a few inches. On a full circle cut in eight panels it is frequently the difference between fitting on the fabric and not fitting at all, because interleaving wedges lets two of them share the width that one-plus-one would otherwise need.
There is a catch, and it is the reason the calculator will not always do it:
Turning a piece 180° reverses the direction the fabric runs.
On a plain weave that is invisible and free. On a one-way print, a nap like velvet or corduroy, or a fabric with a sheen, it means half your skirt is a visibly different shade from the other half — the classic ruined-velvet mistake. Tick This fabric runs one way and the calculator stops using the rotation, which usually costs you length and sometimes costs you the whole layout.
Grain, and the rotation that never happens automatically
Two rotations are possible in principle; only one of them is ever silently applied.

The 90° case is deliberately not automatic. Rotating a circle skirt panel a quarter turn puts the bias in a different place relative to the body, and the skirt will hang and swing differently — potentially quite a lot differently. That is a decision about the garment, not a packing optimisation, so it is offered as a suggestion when width is the binding constraint and applied only when you say so.

Usable width is not the width on the bolt
Every layout starts by throwing some width away.
Selvedges are woven at a different tension from the body of the cloth. They shrink differently, they often carry printing or pinholes, and they do not press flat. The default is to trim half an inch from each edge, so fabric sold as 45 inches gives you 44 inches to actually cut in.
That two-selvedge deduction is why a panel needing 44½ inches across does not fit on 45 inch fabric, which is the single most common “but it should fit” moment in circle skirt planning. If your fabric genuinely has a usable selvedge, change the trim in Sewing details and the layout is recalculated against the width you really have.
Reading a layout
The drawing the calculator produces is to scale, and every piece on it carries four facts:
- Its size, given as across the fabric × along the fabric — not as a radius, because a radius is not something you can check with a tape against cloth.
- Where it starts, as an offset from the left edge and from the top.
- Which way up it is — hem towards the far end, or turned end for end.
- Which way the grain runs through it.
Pieces are named A, B, C and so on, and the cut list repeats the same names, so you can tick them off against the drawing as you cut. Tapping a piece on the diagram tells you its dimensions without needing to find it in the table.
The number worth checking before you cut anything is length used against the length you have. The drawing crops to the length the layout actually needs, so a generous cut of fabric shows the used portion and tells you what is left over.
Lay it out before you buy, not after
The reason to look at a layout at planning time rather than cutting time is that all the expensive mistakes are visible in it. A panel one inch too wide, a nap you forgot about, a length that needs four inches more than the remnant has — each is obvious in a scale drawing and invisible in a yardage number.
